History of Indiana
In 1776 while America was fighting for its independence, Daniel Boone came through the Cumberland Gap. The Cumberland Gap is a hole in the Appalachian Mountains made by a meteorite hundreds of years ago. This let Daniel Boone and his team of explorers claim what is now the Midwest for the fledgling America. Without Daniel Boone, Indiana possibly might not have been discovered and declared American soil for a much longer time. Daniel Boone also lived in Indiana and trade with the Native Americans.
The War of 1812 was important to Indiana because the Native Americans that were on the British side were forced to go onto reservations or move to Canada. William Henry Harrison defeated the Indian leader Tecumseh at the Battle of Tippecanoe.
Indiana Became a state in 1816 during the Industrial Revolution. The first capital of Indiana was in Corydon because the middle and northern parts of Indiana were unsettled and wild. Later, the capital would be moved to Indianapolis because that was in the middle of the state so different counties would not feel like they were not part of Indiana. A very important Hoosier was William Henry Harrison who in the War of 1812 helped America repel the British invaders and defeat the Native Americans. Indiana might be part of Canada if William Henry Harrison had not been able to do this. The Industrial Revolution in the 1800's, 1810's, 1820's, and 1830's brought many great inventions which helped move, transfer, and trade many natural resources from the Midwest to the rest of America. Indiana was considered the frontier even though it is in the Midwest. On March 22nd 1824 a few white settlers encountered a group of Indians at Deer Lick Creek. The creek is often mistaken for Fall Creek. The settlers were convinced that the Indians had stolen some horses from settlers in the area. The Indians tried to flee but the settlers, apparently drunk, gunned them down. 9 Indians were killed, and 7 were women and children. The murderers were not punished or even sent to court. The Deer Lick Creek Massacre was a terrible time in Indiana history.
With tensions rising between Mexico and the United States many citizens were ready to take up arms to finally claim the West. The President, James K. Polk was strong believer in Manifest Destiny which hereby means that America would stretch from coast to coast. As the first shots were fired when American troops were ambushed by Mexican soldiers many people all over the country took up arms to take the land from Mexico they thought was "theirs". General Zachery Taylor was able to march to Mexico City and claim the West. The treaty of Guadeloupe Hidjello gave all of the land we think of the West today to the United States. This is important for Indiana because the United States had not only became a powerful economic power, but new trading routes would open up with Asia.
The gold rush in California in 1849 led to many Indiana residents picked up stakes and left for California in hopes of finding gold. This meant that some entire towns had moved west. Many miners came home unsuccessful but the people who made the most money were the business owners who sold miners their equipment for shockingly high prices. In Indiana the main source of produce was corn. Much of the country's corn production came from Indiana.
With the outbreak of War in 1861 led to 11 states leaving the Union. Many battles would be fought and at the end of the war 600,000 men lay dead. Indiana almost voted to join the Confederate States of America. Had Indiana done this, Lincoln might have lost the Civil War because without resources from the Midwest he would not have been able to feed his army. General Lew Wallace fought for the Union in the Civil War and helped the Union win important victories in the South. The Civil War was very important to Indiana because slaves became free and they had equal rights as whites. This also helped because many freed slaves came north to Indiana and they boosted the economy. Indiana stayed loyal to the North and this showed that we truly believed in our constitution.
Through the 1870's to the 1910's came an economic boom in America. The first plane would be created and tested in North Carolina. This is important because now people could transport resources not only by sea and land but by plane too. This period of time was an economic boom in America. Other countries realized that this was no longer some small country not worthy of trading with or being allies. The first Indy 500 was held in 1911 and having a race every year soon became Indiana tradition.
In WWI everyone realized that America had one of the most powerful militaries in the world. This meant that more countries would want to trade with America for their natural resources. This helped America economically and socially with other countries.
While the Great Depression was going on many Americans were out of jobs and the country became very poor. The United States almost economically fell apart because the stock market and the banks crashed. This lead to the United States almost breaking apart like the Soviet Union almost 50 years later. President Franklin Delanor Roosevelt made projects like the Hoover Dam so American Citizens could be paid to feed themselves and their family. It took WWII to pull America out of its economic slum. The reason this happened was that a quarter of the American male population served in the armed forces against the Axis powers. Many women were working in the factories making jeeps and bullets for the war effort. Because so many jobs had been created, America was able to come out of the Great Depression. John Dillinger was a famous bank robber from Indiana. While the Depression was going on many citizens felt that the banks were untrustworthy so to them John Dillinger was like a Robin Hood to them.
After WWII was over with in the 50's, 60's, and 70's tensions almost exploded between the Soviet Union and the USA. The space race in the 60's led to one of the mot amazing things in the history of the world. Men were finally sent to space. The Cold War was important to America because of the hostility we were able to do things that were never thought possible. We had achieved space travel and we had made computers, this was the turn of the century. In 1974 148 tornadoes hit Indiana, the most in Indiana history.
In the 1980's, 1990's, and early 2000's Indiana and the 49 other states became more technologically advanced. This meant that America had became the most powerful country on the planet. The terrorist attacks in New York resulted in many Americans wanting to stop Al-Qaeda and Taliban. America began to help other countries with not only natural disasters but also wars against terrorism. Through the 200 years of Indiana history, Indiana became a state with religious freedom, equality for all people, technology, good welfare, and a government that was for the people, by the people and to the people.
